That was simply amazing. I will own one of those someday.

The cylinder walls looked pretty thin from 6:00-6:30, I'd worry that they are too thin. Also check out the detail at 6:45, the machine throwing that block back and forth while the drill moves about. It's awesome. Is every Veyron block milled like this, or are factory ones just cast? Those solid blocks have got to be expensive as shit.

I wonder how the cylinder arrangement affects crank strength and head flow. I'm going to look for in depth pics of the heads/intake/exhaust, it has got to be a feat of engineering.

Here's another amazing video of a W16, the hand assembly. Seems like this block is quite a bit different, larger and it looks cast. Still astonishing though:

Its a tried and true cylinder arangement. The VR6 VW engines are arranged this way. It makes sense. 1 head, 6 cylinders and 2 cam shafts while remaining small enough to be FWD.

Its almost a shame the W16 is turbocharged. I'm sure they could have made it 700-800hp NA with a beautiful torque curve. 4 turbochargers on that engine seems like a waste.

The cylinder walls do look thin but they probably have liners that go in there.

With 8 litres it could have made a lot of power N/A. The cylinders were small, so any decent head design could give it the flow/displacement ratio it needs to spin fast and make a lot of power.

However, RPM wears engines out faster. It's a Bugatti, and it costs over a million dollars... it's the best in the world. It was designed for more than just output. It has a relatively low redline (6500) so it will last a long time (or maybe just because the cylinder configuration is crap, but hey, durability has a better ring to it). It's cammed low in order to be docile, smooth and responsive and then turbocharged for output. The *package* does all the right things.

cool vid, however, I feel Okuma builds a better machine tool.

Of course, I may be a bit biased ;)

the okumas that my last employer had were about 15 years old and very reliable, but a PITA to clean.

It is brand new. I'm a service tech for an Okuma distributor. Its a pretty cool gig, actually. I get to go in all these shops and see the neat shit they're building. i.e. automotive, aerospace, and the like. we even have a customer that makes medical stuff like artificial hips and whatnot.

yeah, the old ones that don't have separate coolant tanks can get kinda nasty...
