4 . 9 swap thread, because I can.

Real tech discussion on design, fabrication, testing, development of custom or adapted parts for Pontiac Fieros. Not questions about the power a CAI will give.

Thats what it looks like with the upper intake/throttle body on. Looks a lot better than a carb. :thumbleft:

Well, the fucking thing runs, pretty good too. :thumbleft: I had to fix a huge ass oil leak from the firewall side valve cover, but other than that it seems to be ok. I still have to clean up the wireing, fix the check engine light, smooth out the idle, burp the cooling system and align it. Maybe I"ll drive it to work tomorrow. :afrocool:

Figured I would update this if anyone cares. A little over a month ago while trying to get the engine tuned in good at work it started knocking from the lower end. I drained the oil which came out silver. I pulled the oil pan and the main bearing caps to find all my bearings and my crank were totally fucked. Out came the engine. I got my parts list and ordered everything I needed. I sent my camshaft out to Delta camshaft and got it reground. I cant remember the exact specs, but it gets me to 450 lift which is the max the valve springs will take without binding. I finally got all my parts back last week and this monday I assembled the engine at work. I finished fabbing up some brackets I wanted to remake and got them bolted up to the engine. I threw on the spec stage 3 clutch and the trans. Got it all back into the car today and got it running. You can defenatly tell there is a bigger cam in there! I have a few things to finish tomorrow and I still need to align it before I can drive it again, but I will be at the Auburn Fiero show next weekend with it!

I really need to find some way to tune the fuel. It runs a little rich. Anyone have any ideas of a piggyback unit I could get to work? I want to get something then have it dyno tuned. Then off to the dragstrip to see what I can fuck up. :thumbleft:

Well I am supposed to be at the Auburn show next week too.

I am counting on that canadian fag though to come through. So little chance of me actually being there though.

If I do make it I will look for you. Hell if I make it, it shouldnt' be hard to find me. I will stick out pretty well.

GEt on a dyno first with a wideband to see if you need to tune your afrs at all. there are a few piggyback systems out there you can prob use. If I make it to the show and we can find a dyno we can try to hit it up and I can give you some ideas on what to do.

GEtting a stand alone though prob wouldnt' be worth it IMO.

What chip are you running?
Jon Lagler (Rockcrawl) has run the engines both with Cadillac ECM's and with 7730's and can reprogram both quite well. If you go with the 7730, there's quite an aftermarket for DIY programming.

I really need to see pics of the headers!

Good job, and I applaud your honesty about the 4..9, every other dude just swears by it, and you see its potential, but know that it isn't great from the factory :salute:

With all of your work, 13s should be easy.

Why do you want to see pics of 4point9 headers? your sig shows a Northstar. So what's it matter.

Do you even have the credibility to ask? Why I say this, is becuz if you use your fucking eyes, my sig shows a 3.4l DOHC V6, not a V8. I wish I had the money to do a Northstar swap. Do I need to make my sig bigger?

And why I ask. Who the fuck cares? I'n not doing a 4.9l swap, do not wish to made ANYTHING for the 4.9l, I just want to see. And fyi, I custom build tuned equal length headers, and I can look at headers like lesbian porn (All day strong all day long). I like to critique other's designs, especially if he managed equal length headers in a Fiero, that is truly an accomplishment. But again, I do not make them for a 4.9l, and am not doing this for business purposes. I purely want to see them.

Goddamn isn't a message board a place to share ideas? Fuck I come here thinking I can browse whichever threads I want, and expand my knowledge. Or should I be limited ONLY to threads that pertain directly to me? It is nice to know what others are doing, and I love looking at it. You shouldn't even have posted, and if you actually read the thread, you'd realize I am not the first to ask to see pics of the headers. Now, how many 4.9ers are there on RFT? Not too many, definately not enough to warrant 3 pages of posts. You see, people with ANY engine can admire the work and thoroughness of this swap!

Sorry for the rant/hijack, but I didn't see anything wrong with what I posted.

Settle down and keep it technical.

What's up with this week? Planets in the wrong line or something? I've had to do more moderation in the past week than I have in the entire rest of my time as moderator.

Ah I just don't like being called a "Stupid Fuck"

I personally like the 4point9 for their ease of installation and deceent power over the duke that they replace. Any ability to add power to it is an acomplishment in it's self. Not to mention how well the Allante intake dresses the motor up. I have this odd feeling that the 4point9 can hold it's self together uder some serious compression. without blowing the heads off the top due to the massive head bolts.

The 4point9 will not be able to have have compression due to its terrible combustion chamber and spark plug placement, detonation will come, and the ECU will have to retard the timing so much that its not even worth firing.

And I never called you a "stupid fuck." Although now that I think about it...

The headders are not done/on the car yet. I want to make sure they are right and not rushed.

I'm running a chip from Jon (rockcrawl) with the stock caddy PCM. Maybe I'll shoot him an email and see how much fine tuneing can be done or if I should switch to another PCM.

I drove it home from work today. I'll tell you what, the ported heads, intake and the bigger cam really added a good ammount of power! I'm happy. :thumbleft:

SWEET!.

do the forum a favor and get some dyno time when you can. I would like to see what a heads cam package puts down with the 5 spd.

You can do it man. I think you told me before though that you dont' have a dyno near you. which totally sucks.

I guess I take the one I go to for granted. Its 5 minutes away. Its so nice man. Go whenever I want. Just do the pop in.

I never see you online anymoer either. YOU SUCKZ0r!!
FieroPhrek working on that ls4 swap for 18 years and counting now. 18 years!!!!! LOL

I don't care, stop making excuses and get pics!!! lol j/k

Those headers will add A LOT of power. But a word of advice. 1, stock ECU's don't know what the fuck to do with headers, trust me. You will need to go to someone like Darth and have it tuned. Next, make sure the 02 sensor is heated, or at least as close as possible to the Y pipes. Mine was too far away, and the gases were never hot enough for it to read. Mine ran great after the headers, and picked up a lot of power, but there are things that I didn't do (tuning, bad 02, etc).
