When you winterize a sbc boat you pull the coolant lines to drain it and there are a few drain cocks. There is no coolant in the motor to freeze in the winter.
Freeze plugs are used, and must be brass to prevent corrosion issues. There's these water jacket plugs in a SBC that you're supposed to have draincocks in. I forgot to install them on this thing but I figure I'll (try to) pull the plugs out this winter and make double sure that this thing gets winterized this time around. No antifreeze = broken blocks if you leave water in, I guess that's what trashed my old engine out.
Not sure the bosses are machined (or even there) on new blocks, but older blocks had block drains low on each side to help with that. The early Northstar blocks have them also.
