Post by Sinister Fiero »

Hurricane Rita hasn't hit FL yet and Oil Prices are already going up!?! This is bullshit. Somebody needs to get a handle on this crap.

I can't wait until E85 becomes available in my city early next year. That way I can convert all my vehicles to run on it so I will only be 15% of a slave to the middle east. :cussing:

Yesterday, I heard this was going happen.

What the hell does the Keys have to do with Oil prices? I know they do a lot of oil drilling off the keys(note sarcasm)

After posting this, I looked at the direction of the storm. I hadn't heard about any evacuating of anything other than the Keys. So I assumed it was going to hit the keys from the south and die out in south florida.

I now see its heading west into the gulf.

I'm still going to buy a jar of vasoline when I fill up my tank.

Is E85 85% ethanol or 85% gasoline?

Aside from the fact that you have to rebuild your entire fuel system to be E85 safe...

bah - the system isn't exactly that big -- I replaced all the lines and fuel pump in my system - granted the parts may not all be ethanol safe - but its not that difficult to do

I think the tuning would be the hardest part

Glad you joined in because maybe you have an answer for me since I can't seem to find anyone else who knows...

Obviously I already know that rubber lines and most OEM fuel injectors cannot handle E85. That's not a problem. I am already running an aftermarket fuel pump and injectors in my Fiero that are alcohol-friendly. The burning question I have is what about the steel fuel lines, fuel tank, and plastic baffles in the tank of the Fiero? E85 compatible or not? And if not, what exactly will happen?

I believe you'll need to have the inside of the fuel tank coated to protect it

The only reason E85 or alchol is "corrosive" is cuz it absorbs atmospheric moisture, no? Same as Methanol? That and I guess that alcohol dissolves stuff that they never bothered building gas systems to be protected against. It's not like some sorta acid that's gonna eat through anything not made out of teflon or glass.

The easier route would be to get one of those FFV's since they're already set up. Matter of fact, they're already equipped with a fuel sensor that'll switch fuel maps when nessicary. That'd be kinda cool. Now to kick GM in the ass and make them get into the FFV game some more...

And the hybrid game, and the electric car game...

Steel fuel lines ought to be OK. I'd replace all the rubber with E85 safe rubber. Not sure about the inside fo the tank, but I'd be real cautious with it. Does anyone know exactly what plastic those baffles are made of?
