ls4 and manual, please educate me

Still wondering why this hasn't been done yet. I remember hearing how the starter is in the wrong position? Where is it and how far off is it from the factory v6 or 4 banger position?

Also I am guessing the flywheel would need to be fabbed. Educate me on this. If one was able to bolt it to the factory tranny, would a redrilled flywheel be the correct thickness and bolt in?

Info along with pics would be great.

Also what if someone wanted to mate this engine to a factory th 125 auto tranny. STock converter and redrilled flexplate work? Taking into account that you would have the starter problem figured out.

Short version: small FWD flwheel + LSx Y block design = no room for starter on engine side, unless you put it under the oil pan.

For a manual LS4 you need to find a starter that will clear the pressure plate and then figure out a way to mount it.

I saw that thread but couldn't follow it. Where is the stock starter mounted? it it in the valley like on a nstar? I looked for pics over there but didn't see any. Like I said, I couldn't follow that thread at all. too many people talking about what they want to do, but noone really talking about what needs to be done ina concise way for me to understand.

ok so what it looks like is the starter is mounted not underneath the engine, but on top, facing the other direction, and bolted to the tranny.

Yes. Other than a reverse rotation starter mounted to the bellhousing, the space inside the bellhousing that's available for a clutch is exactly the same as the V6's, Northstar and such.

There's already a thread on this over on pfiffle. I just added to it yesterday. Over there I'm Isolde, ( I thought Tristan was the girl, I got called on it, I re-watched the movie, but why change it?) and the thread was started by av8fiero.

Now that I've read every post in this thread so far, let me add that while I have set aside the truck 5.3 in favor of a real LS4, Noone on either forum has yet completed an LS4 with manual transaxle.

Maybe you could put a starter on the belt side somehow?

Now there's a new idea. I'll start with a few searches. Thanks.

I dont like how that solenoid is so close to the hot side of the cross over with no heat shielding.

That won't be a problem if going to custom headers instead of keeping the LS4 setup. Stupid LKQCorp. wanted more money to include it, so I told them I was just curious and not really needing it.
