An Idaho woman admitted to causing a car accident that killed a father and a son in what authorities believe was a failed attempt to kill herself by recreating her lover's death.
Cheryl Marie Wise, 24, pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular manslaughter in Idaho's Fifth District Court Tuesday for the July 23, 2005, deaths of Francisco Rojas-Ramos and his 9-year-old son, Julian, on the same isolated stretch of road where the married mother's lover died in a fatal collision three days earlier.
Evidence from cellphone towers revealed that Wise — who was described as suicidal by her husband in a missing person's report filed the night of the accident — made the call from the approximate location where Frances Gereau, a man believed to be Wise's lover, died three days earlier in a head-on collision.
Blaine County Sheriff J. Walt Femling said an eyewitness also placed Wise at the scene of Gereau's accident, which is marked by a cross on the side of the road.
Femling said Gereau was under the influence of alcohol and speeding when he veered out of his lane, killing the driver of an oncoming vehicle.
"We believed [Wise] intentionally drove into an oncoming car in order to kill herself and die in the same manner as her boyfriend," Femling said in a telephone interview. "She bought alcohol, sleeping pills, and we found a witness who saw her at the location of her boyfriend's accident just before hers occurred."
Newspaper clippings and Gereau's ashes were found in her car when her crash occurred.
