how much to rebuild a e36 bmw ///m engine?

Post by 84fierotrevor »

Someone wants to trade me a 1995 bmw m3 with low compression in one cylinder for my 2003 R1 sportbike. I don't need advice on this being a bad deal on my part because I Just don't care I need to get ride of my bike soon or its gonna get stolen in this crackhead town. What I do need is advice on how much its gonna run me to have the low compression cylinder repaired.
I don't know what is causing it. And I don't think the guy that owns it does ether, but he might. But if I'm gonna have that issue fixed since the engine is already gonna be apart. Shouldn't I just have the engine rebuilt while I'm at it?
Any idea on what that might run?

id budget for 5-10k depending on how much of a "rebuild" you wanna do.

And if you have some left over.... yay!

Find out where it's leaking from. If it's a bad valve, it's not so bad; pull the heads off, drop $600 in headwork, throw 'em on and laugh.

If it's not burning oil, likely it's the head-gasket or the valves. Either way, it's not a bad ordeal. Expensive at the dealer, though.

BMW engine will NOT be cheap to overhaul. Custom American pistons might be cheaper than German aftermarket pistons, for instance.

Cool, thanks. We will see how the ordeal goes and if it goes thru and I decide to trade him. I think it will be worth paying extra to have better parts thrown inside since I was thinking of boosting it down the road.

Try giving 'em a call. They probably even have a good used engine. No clue on the prices though, but it's a good starting point.

I'd say around $5-$6K. Thats what it's going to cost a friend of mine to rebuild his E36 engine, and thats just a 2.5. I'm sure the M engine would be more. I know parts for my E39 are expensive at the dealer, even with my employee discount.

no ls1 thanks. unlike how alot of fiero owners think,i dont feel every car can be made better with a big v8. i think the i6 of the bmw is perfect for the car. and fits its caractoristcs well.
i also think the syliva engine in the shebly gt was gay too.

Oooh. Gotcha. I didn't pay to close attantion to anything in that movie :)
I thought they took the motor outa that sylvia he smacked up in the begining which I thought was a s15 which I think has the sr20det. But I wouldn't be suprised if I'm wrong about all of the above :) I'm not big into the imports or cars for that matter. Enough to know a little bit right and a bunch wrong tho haha :p

That's pretty cool. What state you located in? And how much does that setup run installed? "I can't check myself my sidekick won't go to the page for some reason"
I'm afraid to boost my car because then I will have to deal with honda's trying to race me, people asking me questions, and tons of shit talking, all of which I don't have the time or patients for right now.
On the otherside tho. It would be nice not to get owned by stock cobalts or srt4's.
I miss my srt-4

It was in a Sylvia, though. It was probably the GTS engine also (Since Sylvia's are RWD only).

The sylvia had an RB26DETT swap. They then swapped the motor into the mustang.

I couldn't agree more, that engine is spectacular. And MY GOD does it sound good!

Though 420hp is nothing to complain about, I think I'd rather have this engine turbocharged (Or twin turbo), to keep in line with its factory personality.

In the movie the Silvia REALLY HAD a SR20. But for the story line they "said" it had an RB26... so it made more sense when they pull it out of the S14 and throw it into the Mustang...

RB26 can be swapped to RWD with a simple oil pan change and bolted to RB25 trans

The GTS's only had the 25? D-oh.

Lotsa trouble to go to for .1 litres on a really stout engine

im pretty sure besides the .1 difference there is alot more... the 26 was twin turbo and the 25 was a NA engine.

the RB20 was a single turbo available in GTS.

GTR is the only R32/R33/R34 model to get the RB26DETT

All the other R32s got the RB20DETT untill the R33s came out then the RB25 was available on the GTS

think there was even a 4cyl in there somewhere too...

RB20DET
RB25DE
RB26DETT (the engine everyone wishes they had)
