Car title?

Post by crzyone »

I am looking at buying a car from the States and have a few questuions. The guy I'm looking to buy from says he doesn't have the title to the car, I will just post what he wrote.
well there are a few problems, 1st, i dont have the title, i wont get the title
untill my loan is payed off from my bank.

My problem is I need the title faxed to the border 72 hours before I cross. If he doesn't have the title to the car I will need to do some calling to the border to see what needs to be done.

Step 4 on this site also says I need the title faxed to the border

Info would be appreciated!

Does he have the title memorandum? If he doesn't, he doesn't own the car and he is pulling your leg.

In the states if a title goes missing a title can be re-issued if you can prove you own it. Or a state inspection agency can inspect the car, prove it is not stolen, verify the mileage, verify the vin, and create a title. We do it for fieros here all the time and just did it for a 55 desoto, my dad is a licensed inspector.

If you want you can pm me some more details and I can forward them to my father who is a dealer and knows the title game pretty well.

If the guy has a loan for the car, the the lender has the fucking title until he pays off the note. What hes telling you is that he wont have the title until he pays off the debt (with your money from the sale) then the title will be re-issued to him, then he can sell it to you.

From many experiances, unless you cant get another car similar, steer clear of people who dont have the title in their hands, clean and clear. Its just too much hastle to deal with.

That's why I asked, we don't have titles in Canada.

This is a problem because I would not be able to cross the border for 3 days after having the title in hand. The border is pretty strict on the 72 hour rule.

he could take out a personal loan, or use credit cards to pay off the car so he could get the title, and you could buy it. then he could just pay back the new debt with the sale money. Its an easy fix.

He is selling the car because of the current economy. I don't think he would have the ability to do that. I will have to think and consider my options.

Possibly work a deal with the lender and him like a short sale on a house. the lender gets paid more than they would get at auction.

Or just have his bank fax the title 3 days before you go down, then go with him to the bank and pay off the loan for him.

This is a good option. I've already mentioned to him about getting a photocopy of the title from the bank. I like your idea of having them fax a copy to the border instead.

I will call the border tomorrow and see what options I have. If I get a loan on Friday morning, I can book a flight Friday afternoon for the following Monday or Tuesday. I don't need him to send anything to the border before knowing the loan is approved which should be no problem.

Ok, things are starting to work out
Hey Levi, i found some information for you from my credit union. Also, if you have
any more question about the loan and the transfering of the money i got a person you
can call. Just let them know your buying the 2005 GTO from Arther. So first, i can
get a copy of the title faxed to the boarder for ya. Second, my credit union would
like you to try and get a different type of check, insted of the personal check, i
forgot what the lady told me what kind of check, ill find that out today and let ya
know. Here is the info of the person you can call for any more info.
Of course I would never give out a personal cheque. I've been burned that way myself. I will call his bank today and verrify everything. He did give me a number to call so all is good.

If I get the loan Friday and they send a copy of the title on Friday, I can fly down Saturday or Sunday and cross the border Monday at the earliest. Hopefully I can get a Sunday flight but can't book until I have the cheque in hand.

I know for new cars you will also need all docs showing that ALL recalls have been performed on the vehicle

Why can't they just drive it across the border? Nobody carries their title in their glovebox... at least they shouldn't.

Becaue I need to take the car through customs and pay the taxes, duty and all that crap. Then I need to go to the American side and export the car.

It blows my mind how difficult they make this. It's completely legal to do but the whole process can be streamlined a lot. Who cares of the border gets a title 72 hours in advance... when I imported my fiero 6 or so years ago it was only 24 hours. They switched it when the Canadian dollar was higher than the American dollar. Probably to slow the importation of cars and trucks.

All said and done, a $18,000 GTO will cost me around $22500-23000. Still a bargain to me so it works out.

Hmmm, '05 gto????

Have you driven one? Could be a good investment if your gonna keep the miles low and not trash it. last fast pontiac PERIOD. There only going to go up in price, as they are probably one of the best deals going because of the weakish lines on the body.

If this is an investment, I suggest buying NOS GTO spare parts.

He should have a memorandum title to the car. Also the bank is going to want a verified cashiers check. Cashiers checks don't bounce.

I have not driven one. Canada just adopted the same bumper ratings as the US about 6 months ago. There are a few cars like the GTO, EVO 8 and 9, R32 VW and others that did not meet our "standards".

No GTOs were sold in Canada, so I've never seen one on the road let alone driven one. Looking forward to it. I've read nothing but positive things about the GTO.

Since this will be my daily driver I won't be keeping the miles low, I'll drive it like it's ment to be driven :-D

Neither do certified cheques that I'm aware of.

Here you never mentioned that you planned to use a certified check, so I didn't know if you knew that or not. Shouldn't have doubted you, sorry. :-D Yeah, certified will do it. They happen to use a lot of cashiers checks here, that's why I mentioned it. A Certified is good too. Those little credit unions just want to know that they can call your bank and make sure you're not going to bounce it.
