Re: Northstar 180* headers.
What I'm trying to get across to Aaron is that no, a design with slightly different primary lengths isn't absolutely optimal, but it's so little different than optimal that the difference doesn't matter. Atilla's example of 5 HP on 800 is a difference that only matters in Pro-Stock and F1.
Yes, the VE curve of cylinders with different length primaries will be different, thereby rendering the engine untunable... well, sort of. The long tube cylinder will pull more air and need more fuel at low RPM than the short tube cylinder, and vice versa at high RPM. However, if the difference between the ideal AFR's for the two cylinders at any given RPM point is only .1 or even .05, then the difference is irrelevant. AFR can barely be measured that accurately. The difference is down in the noise, as Atilla's dyno results show. It's probably a good day on the dyno when the difference between two runs with the *SAME* configuration is less than 5 HP on 800.
The burden of proof is on Aaron to SHOW (IE, demonstrate via calculation of the required AFR's or dyno results) that a 3" range for primary lengths is unacceptable.

Sorry for the pics, they are cell phone pics. You should get the idea though.

Will there be cats?
Re: Northstar 180* headers.
If I have room for them, yes, but at this point, it isn't looking like it. I want them, just can't fit them.

Heavy, yes, sort of, if compared to unequal length shorty headers. But breaking? I think not.

I don't know... Lowlux can break just about anything.
BTW, those headers look nice. I hope you post a video of the engine running.

Heavy compared to a log style? Yah. Heavy compared to stock? No.Atilla the Fun wrote:Heavy, yes, sort of, if compared to unequal length shorty headers. But breaking? I think not.
And no, they won't break.
Very true I have no doubt he would find a way.TheFieroBoy wrote:I don't know... Lowlux can break just about anything.

Thanks, and I absolutely will!

Wow, nice work man! I have not been in this section for a while.
Please get some sound clips as soon as it's running.

Damn. I make time for every section every day (except sundays, because I have no net access)crzyone wrote:Wow, nice work man! I have not been in this section for a while.

It runs!
My friend started it up for the first time a couple days ago. It still needs a lot of work, and has a long way to go, but it's getting there, somehow.

I was afraid of that, I'll re-host it...

You need higher quality video from in the car when its moving and some mufflers. My 3800 with open headers sounded pretty much the same in my garage.

In a way, it's impressive, but in a way, it's shameful. Caddys are supposed to be eloquent. 32 valve V8s are supposed to be smooth. That sounds more like a dirt-track 350 Chevy than a modern Cobra or a BMW or a Ferrari. Still, it's good that it's running. On with the tuning.

Working on that partCincinnatiFiero wrote:You need higher quality video from in the car when its moving and some mufflers. My 3800 with open headers sounded pretty much the same in my garage.

Re: Northstar 180* headers.
It's gonna be funny the day some dumbass asks something about what engine you adapted an LSx intake onto. I'd love to be there.
Re: Northstar 180* headers.
Tell me about it. That and "What engine is that, my buddy put a 350 in his it's fast."

No engine with an open exhaust is going to sound eloquent... not even a "silky smooth" V12.Atilla the Fun wrote:In a way, it's impressive, but in a way, it's shameful. Re: Northstar 180* headers.
Haha... Listened to F1 cars? It can be done, but the headers and collectors have to be tuned to the 9's.
