I'm VERY curious about the aluminum space frame. If that were obtainable, it would be a sweet project.

It would have been a sweeter production car, though... <2500# & 195 HP... Better power/weight ratio than a TPI Corvette.

I guess it depends on the dyno your using.

The ass dyno says 400, and Carol Shelby says........

An endless battle I guess, but at least the majority of the sane members of both forums are aware of whats really going on.

In the spirit of such claims I will safely say that with the addition of my CAI, ported exhaust manifolds, my 8 mm wires, and sweet ass racing stripe that my 2.8 is pushing 250 to the tires without a doubt.

I just need to get McLaren to sign it and away we go.

This is an excellent thread. Its nice to hear about these things. You have a piece of history there and it would be awesome to get a detailed story to go with it.

The only information I have on that motor can be found in the 60 degree performance handbook. I saw a few other things in the Pontiac Motorsports catalogue I have a home, I will try and add some more info up for ya.

Hows that project coming anyways?

Update, I got the email of the guy who bought the other block, and fired one off to him. I got a reply.
Jamie, Great to hear from you. I got distracted for the last one and a half years and didn't do anything with the block after I got it. It looks really neat and I would love to knock some weight off the rear of my 88 2.5L coupe stripper model. It only weighs 2550 pounds, but it would be nice to be even less. It is lowered with 245/45/16 Pilot Cup tires on all 4 courners that provide a lot of grip. 500 #/inch springs in back with my own threaded coil over conversion on cheap shocks. Fun driving around the outside of NSX's and C6 corvettes on corners.

No real experience with the motor yet. Measured it and found it needs the early rope seal small journal crank. That about it. Had a smokin' deal for roller rockers, 3.1 aluinum heads, polished 3.1 FI intake, timing chain, etc, but the guy got into an ugly divorce and lost it all. I haven't looked at the motor since.

How do you feel about the small journal crank? I originally wanted to push up to a 3.1/3.4 crank, but I wonder now if it is truly worth the trouble.

I'm in AZ.
Were are you? McCreey sold the matching heads from my motor to someone else in AZ but I don't know who. Late 3.1 or 3.4 heads should be better, I suppose

You should talk him into buying my gen 2 heads and ITB intake setup. At least send him pics through email or something to get him drooling.

I even have matching pistons for 12:1 compression.

I have a few friends that work for the engineering department here in Oshawa for GM but they laugh at me whenever I ask about the Fiero. I guess not everyone finds this as interesting as we do.

There is a rumour that Alcan or Magna (one or the other) still has an aluminum space frame from a Fiero. Mate that with the aluminum 60 degree and instant party bitches :)

Anyways, no more jacking your thread for today. My block/heads are made of Iron, and have nothing useful to add.

Oh one other thing. There was a Gen 1 race engine for sale awhile back on ebay, I think Shaun linked it for us. I believe that engine had shaft mounted roller rockers, but I could be wrong. I also think that engine had the larger valves, but once again I don't totally recall but it is evidence of at least one other in existance.
According to the Witzenburg book, the "Porsche Eater" Fiero had a turbocharged and intercooled Aluminum block 2.9l V6. Bolted to an Automatic, looks like a 4T60, but probably a Th125, I can't tell I don't know my auto trannies that well. Made 220-235HP, did 0-60 in 6.2, which apparently was scary fast back in those days. The book says nothing about the frame, but implies that they just dropped the 2.9 into a stock Fiero and took it to the proving grounds.

You are indeed correct. I have read far too much Fiero literature over the years it seems and may have confused a few points.

Well I dug up the Aluminum frame information if anyone is interested. From the same book as mentioned above of course.

It states that there was two of them built in 1986 by Alcan Automotive Structures of Canada. The frame was built using the same molds as the conventional steel frame but used an adhesive agent rather then welding. The reduction in weight was 68% (frame), and the boosted torsional stiffness by 42%. These cars were equiped with the high output 2.3 Quad Four with 190 bhp matted to the good old 282 Getrag. These cars also had the power steering option.

So here's a question for those with more information and knowldege than me. Which of these two would be quicker.

a) 220 bhp 2.9 turbo charged steel framed Fiero

OR

b) 190 bhp 2.3 naturally aspirated aluminum frame Fiero
