3800?

Post by Dryfter_09_19 »

What kinda car should i be looking for? Doesn't matter if it's super charged or not. Unless there is a major price difference. I can find a SC on ebay for 450+shipping. I know i can look in a Grand Prix GT and GTP but what else has the 3800?

It does matter if it's supercharged or not. The heads have provisions for fitting the injectors on the SC motors, while the N/A motors have injectors in the manifold. Also the engine internals are set up differently for blower use, namely compression ratio and stuff. It won't be cost effective to try to convert a N/A to a SC motor, unless you want the higher compression and have excelent tuning skills.

I would suggest finding a complete donor as opposed to piecing it together.

Also 450 is high for an EBay blower...they usually go for 150-250

Yeah... there's no aftermarket for the Series I.

Series II is '96 and later, IIRC.

There are 2 different series 1 s/c 3800's. The first edition (91-92?) came out with like 205 hp and 240 tq, the 2nd (93-94?) had an upgrade with 225 hp and 260 tq. Neither of these engines have an aftermarket because most of the components don't swap with a s2 3800. They changed the block and the heads from s1 to s2. Also they upgraded from an m62 supercharger to an m90.

Edit: don't quote me on those years, I'm not 100% sure on them.

As far as donor cars...

-Buick
Regal GS
LeSabre
Riviera

-Pontiac
Grand Prix GTP
Bonneville SSEi

-Chevrolet
fwd Impala SS
Monte Carlo SS

I'm not thinking of any Oldsmobiles that had an SC 3800. The list may be otherwise incomplete.

James Curtis who just posted above has a series 1 for sale cheap. That would get your foot int he door and 225 hp is nothing to sneeze at. I would pm him about it if you are serious about doing a swap.

:thumbleft: NP, if i were buying a series 2 SC, i think i would look for one from a park avenue ultra. think about it, a GTP, regal, mote carlo ss, impala ss, bonivelle are all aimed at a more spirited driver. and the rivi is a toss up. but the likely hood of a park avenue ultra being beat on is small. more than likely it was owned by some old person that wrecked it pulling into the back of the garageone too many times, or got rearended for not going fast enough on the hwy. they are just not likely to have been beat on.

alright, back to advertising homework. gotta go watch some tv! :fart:
