I a under the impression that the can on the A/C lines just behind the compressor is some kind of "muffler" I'm getting ready to make a set of custom A/C lines for my 3500 swap, and I was wondering if that can is necessary, or if it's just a NVH band aid.

I think it just muffles compressor noise and smooths out pressure pulses.
Swap a Variable Orifice Valve in place of your stock orifice tube while you're at it... dramatically increases A/C effectiveness at low vehicle and engine speeds.

awesome, that'll make packaging way easier! is the orifice valve a drop in replacement for the tube?
