I would guess these aren't legal for road use?

This mod is as legal as any other aftermarket headlight or tail light housing that you can get for any car.

Are the housings, lenses, and lamps DOT approved?

Any pics of the beam pattern (pull up to a garage door or something)?

No aftermarket HID lamp is DOT approved in the USA due to the lack of standardization, however it does have ISO 9001:2000, and E-Mark e24.
ISO 9001:2000 is an international standard for quality and the e mark is similar to our DOT rating, but for Europe.

I do not have these in a car, but I took a pic of them against a wall:

Thanks, so I guess the headlights need to come out, sweet. I had an H4-2 8000k kit laying around and I pulled the H6054-H4 faux-projectors out of my 88. Sorry I didn't buy your kit, but maybe my installed pics could be of some use to you.
